EyewearGlasses and Lenses

Eyewear

Wearing glasses is like cosmetic surgery without the pain! It can immediately change your appearance and how your character is represented. Many people choose to have multiple pairs to suit their mood and outfits!

A study in 2013 showed that job hunters were more likely to be hired if they wore glasses to the interview.

Glasses are now considered cool to wear and 40% of the population would consider wearing clear-lens glasses to get ahead at work and look fashionable.

Whether you’re wearing glasses for fashion or function, the key is to choose a style that you look good in.

Considering your face shape is a good place to start. Glasses can really help to balance out your features. If, for example, you have a longer face, opt for a deeper frame to balance it out, while narrower lenses complement a shorter face.

So how do you work out your face shape? Have a look at our Blog article "Frame your Face Shape".

And remember, we always ensure your glasses fit you before you take them home and we also offer spectacle adjustments and minor repairs.

Glasses and LensesA Perfect fit

We have a variety of options available, depending on your needs and tastes:

  • Single vision lenses for simple distance or reading prescriptions.
  • Bifocal or varifocal lenses for people who require a different prescription for close work to distance (usually the over 40’s).
  • High index and aspheric lenses for thinner, lighter lenses.
  • Toughened lenses for high impact resistance/safety.
  • Photochromic lenses that change colour according to the light levels and protect against UV are available (some now even change in the car).
  • Prescription sunglasses including polarised tints, sports glasses, swimming goggles and safety glasses are all available.
  • Anti reflective coatings - to virtually elminate distracting reflections on the lens surface. This is especially useful for computer users and night driving.
  • Hard coats which can prolong lens life and are less liable to scratch.
  • Other coats include U/V block, water-repellent and blue light block.

Contact Lenses

Many people can wear contact lenses these days. There are 2 main type of contacts available:

Soft  - flexible and mould to the shape of your eye.

Rigid  - hard gas-permeable lenses which are less flexible.

We use many different contact lens companies so we can provide the best lens for your needs, including Cooper Vision/Sauflon, Acuvision (Johnson & Johnson), Cibavision and Menicon.

Many different factors are taken into account when deciding which is the best type of contact lens to try for you:

Contact lens
  • Consider how long and often you want the lenses for - part time wear or every day.
  • What your prescription strength is - not all lenses are suitable for astigmatism (irregular curve/ prescription of the eye), special lenses are required for presbyopia (ie a different prescription is needed for distance and close work).
  • Daily disposable contact lenses can be more hygienic and convenient.
  • Monthly or fortnightly replacement lenses are more cost effective (if worn most days) and some special prescriptions are only available in this type of lens. However reusable contacts require careful cleaning and disinfecting.
  • Continuous (overnight or extended) wear contact lenses are available, but greatly increase the risk of infection.
  • Some contact lenses allow for longer wearing times due to higher oxygen permeability( which is healthier for the eye) for example. silicone hydrogel materials.

Modern contact lenses are very safe to wear if you follow your optometrist's advice on how to wear and look after them.

Never rinse your contact lenses in tap water and avoid showering or swimming in contact lenses. Prescription swimming goggles are a safer alternative. If you do swim in lenses they must be disposed of after the swim and you must wear tight-fitting goggles - please seek advice from the optician.

If you have a successful contact lens trial, we will teach you how to put your lenses in and remove them safely before you can take them home.

We offer a monthly payment plan for contact lenses and solutions and with this there is no extra charge for the aftercare appointments. These checks are quite different to a normal eye exam.

Magnifiers

When spectacles are no longer enough, then magnifiers and magnifying readers can enable you to once again enjoy comfortable vision.
Optical vision aids are also extremely useful for those who want to read the smallest details clearly, for hobbies or work.
