06/01/2016 — Local optometrist, Tracey Kingston White of Kingston White Opticians, has won a Silver fundraising award from eye care charity Optometry Giving Sight. The award is in recognition of Kingston White Opticians  for raising £100 during the World Sight Day Challenge 2015.

With the support of their patients, Kingston White Opticians held a fundraising event in the practice (guess the number of eyeballs in a jar for a prize of a sunglasses) and made a donation per eye exam during the month of October, to help the 600 million people in the world who are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam or glasses. The winner of the competition was 5 year old Jamie Dale of Knaresborough.

“As an optical practice, we think it is incredibly important to support a cause that is helping provide eye care to people for whom this vital service is not available” said Tracey Kingston White  “The World Sight Day Challenge is a fun way to involve our patients in supporting overseas projects that are helping thousands of people have access to eye exams and glasses.”

Tracey Kingston White was inspired by stories like that of Annie and Sonia.

Annie and Sonia are two of 1500 children who have benefitted from a recent screening program in Cap Haitian, Haiti. Poor vision made it very difficult for both of them to see the teachers’ writing on the blackboard.  They were identified as having astigmatism and were referred to the Vision Plus Clinic, part funded by Optometry Giving Sight, for a full examination and to obtain glasses. "Thank you for helping my daughters see the world," Said the mother after her daughters put on their first pair of glasses!
